SQL Developer does not start and does not say why

Hi,

I have been using SQL Developer for a long time. Now, all of a sudden, it stopped working. When I run sqldeveloper.exe, the process fails immediately. The only message from sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.exe is: Java asserts are enabled!

I am using Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit, JRE 1.8, SQL Developer 4.1.3.20.78.

Any ideas what might be wrong?
