sql date conversion to javascript

Does anyone know how the date conversion works from SQL to javascript. I 'm passing a date from the results of a query through the report attributes link option to a javascript popup. The result I'm getting is a number. Probably calculated from a beginning date of some kind. Maybe point me to some documentation on how Apex handles dates.
