sparse files : Performance Perspective encouraged or discouraged.

Hello,

I am setting up a big infrastructure of Oracle VM 2.2 (OCFS2 1.4 is by default sparce fs enabled), Setup is complete and Testors will start using application in next 1 month or so. while surffing to resolve my issue with "ERROR=> make_dir: failed CDS accquire lock /OVS/.ovs-agent/db/collect_srv_stat.lock timeout. locker process is 22586."

I found one statement for Sparce file as below :

" In general, sparse files (which only allocate physical media space when written) are discouraged because of the performance penalties."

Can somebody please give me some idea, on what performance impact does this mean? and how much ? :)

Since I would definitely like to give, robust, stable, secure & PERFORMANCE Tunned Oracle VM 2.2 infrastructure to the Team.

In Production environment or Performace Testing Environment I will not care about cost involved in SAN (EMC Symmetrics + VMAX).

Any replies, would be great. Since I want to get rid of grey areas.
