SP2-0158: unknown SET option "message"

I have a sql file apend.sql that containg it first line as:

SET MESSAGE OFF

This file was running fine with SQL*PLUS 8.1 (Oracle 8i)

But after migration to Oracle10g and it is running with SQL*Plus 10.2
the following message is coming:

SP2-0158: unknown SET option "message"

Can anyone give the resaon for this? I am not able to fine this in Oracle document.
