Solaris 9 and Windows XP network

I am trying to setup a network between Solaris 9 and Windows XP. I have done all the initial setup on both operating systems, i.e given them ip addresses, plumb the interface in solaris, update, hosts table etc. However i cannot ping to my Windows XP box from solaris and I cannot ping my Solaris box from Windows. I am using a crossover cable, could this be the problem. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
