Sockets - Dealing with Routers and Port Forwarding

I am curious as to how different pieces of software like Live Messenger, AIM, and Yahoo are creating applications that don't require users to setup port forwarding on their routers (assuming they have one).

Can this behavior be implemented in Java?

If so, API references would be appreciated.
