Smart cards families

Hello.
I am quite interesting in the cards different from Java Cards that also exist today on the stores.
May be anyone had experience with some other cards, and could tell me the most widelt used and known families of smart cards besides Java Card family (e.g. Basic Cards, etc.)?
I am also interested what languages are used in the other cards? Are the any special development fot those?

The most interesting question would be:
What is the performance of the other cards compared to Java cards?

I would really appreciate any information.
