Single Sign On (SSO) from 3rd party web application to APEX.

Hi,

I potentially have a situation where a client would like to have a Single Sign On (SSO) from their web application to an APEX application hosted by us (i.e. 2 different servers on 2 different networks). I'm wondering if anyone has done this before, and if so how did you do it in a secure fashion? For now I'm not looking at specifics just braining storming some ideas.
