Single instance DB and Oracle Clusterware

user12006136Jan 4 2010 — edited Feb 7 2010
Hi,

I am preparing to use Oracle Cluserware 11g to protect a single instance 10gR2 EE database (on Linux RHEL4). Some time ago I found the doc: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clusterware/pdf/SI_DB_Failover_11g.pdf and I am about to implement the solution.

There are some things that are not clear for me and I will be grateful for your opinions.

1. I will use ASM as the shared storage. I understand that I should install a clustered ASM just like for a RAC cluster. Am I right?
Will it be OK with the Oracle's licensing policy (we don't have incenses for RAC)? Will that solution prevent from destroying data files if somebody accidentally starts the database instance on the second/passive node?

2. As I know during the installation of the Oracle Clusterware, a virtual address for each node is configured. I plan to use also another VIP for my single instance database. Is it possible to use only the second one VIP (for my database) and not configure the additional addresses for each node?

3. The database uses dblinks to contact other databases. The other data sources are behind firewalls and I would like to have all traffic coming from the same address regardless of which cluster node is currently active. Would it possible to forward all outgoing connections from my cluster (established via dblinks) through the cluster’s VIP address?

Thanks for any support,

Pit
