Simulate World (Globe) as a Sphere Object

Hi
Is it possible to put a worldmap on a sphere-object to get a 3d-simulation of the real world? The target is to get a virtual globe, a virtual version of this one which stands typically in a geography classroom, which lets the user turn the map and get a view of 'choice'. Something similar to microsofts encarta worldmap.
