Significance of dot in cp command

I was little confused to understand if there is any difference between below 2 commands:

cp -v cwomcp.war $CATALINA_CP/sterlite/

cp -v cwomcp.war $CATALINA_CP/sterlite/.

The only difference is the . (dot) at the end of the second command.

I hope, I have been able to explain the problem.
