Shuttle functionality and groups

Richard LeggeSep 16 2014 — edited Sep 16 2014

Hi All, todays question, or some advice etc...

APEX 4.2.5

XE 11.2

Starting to us the Data shuttle because I'm building some groups into my application for a number of different entities...   I was vaguely expecting that the insert would provide you to insert into a child table... Obviously not, and Im starting to use column, and a ':' delimited set of data as per the functionality.

So, onto a few observations / challenges..

However, I can help feeling that its a bit clumsy...  One of the issues is see,  is that if I then do a select with a where xxx like '%'||my_shuttle_list||'%'  I need to put in the full value rather than an ID...Otherwise a like will pick up any partial elements of an id.. i.e. i search on ID 12, and because an ID 1234 is in the list, it will return true...   So, then Ive got an extremely text column representing my list... (and of course, it cannot be indexed..

I know that there is UTIL.STRING_TO_TABLE, which would be ideal, but I don't think, unless Ive read incorrectly, that it can be used in an SQL statement..  Is there anything else that could work..

Then, there is the issue where I'd to get at the information from 2 dimensions.. i.e. I'd like to be able to go in and list one set of data and see what groups they belong to, or go into the other set of data and see what groups they belong to....   having a delimited string in a field, isn't really ideal to look at it from both dimensions..

Everything points towards having a parent / child table, but the question then, is if there is anything 'out there' i.e. an extension to the shuttle that either overwrites the functionality to save a delimited string, or carries out some auto synchronisation between the various tables.. Ive had a look around for plugins, but haven't seen one that fits the bill.

Hope this makes sense... Any advice would be useful..

Rgds

Richard
