Severe hair loss over Java3D overlay issues

843799May 20 2007 — edited Apr 4 2009
Hello,

I have searched far and wide for some 'current best practice' advice regarding how one can overlay text on a Canvas3D. The best I have come up with is some dead links, references to an 'experimental JCanvas3D' class and old code from 2003 or before.

Could someone please advise as to the standard current approach to achieving overlays/HUDs for the following situations:

(1) Using a Graphics2D/Java2D object to draw the overlay graphics
(2) Displaying GUI (Swing) components on top of a Canvas3D.

I am wanting to draw a menu of text over my Canvas3D, just like occurs in 3D games like Operation Flashpoint (i.e. for choosing weapons etc.). Does anyone have any suggestions that might not require overlay?

Thank you for any up to date information.
Greg
