setting up PATH on Suse Linux to make javac work

Hi,
I know that there are similar post on this topic, but can someone tell me in simple terms what I need to do to make javac work from a terminal window on on Suse 10.2. It is working from eclipse ok, but I only have 256mb memory and eclipse is a bit slow.
My java is located at /usr/java/1.6.0_03 although Netbeans isn't recognising it as being here either. Can someone help?
