setting fixed positions for field items

Hi,

I have a a form that house multiple items on column position 1,2 and 3. One of the items is a text area surrounded by normal text fields on column position 1.

The problem im having is i want the length of the text area to span over two columns(resizing) but by doing this it moves the other items on the page, making it very wide :-(

Any help will be appreciated.
