Setting Environment Variables

Hello,
Can anyone help me with setting an environment variable in Win 98 SE??
I need to do this in order to install Tomcat server on my machine. It is easy to do this in win2k becoz env vars can be accessed directly thru control panel, but how the hell do u do this in win 98 se? im assuming thru autoexec.bat file but i dont know the syntax.
