set class path

Hi! i m new to java. i installed jdk1.2 on XP. to execute a java program i have to save the file in bin n change the directory on the command prompt to jdk1.4/bin.
i want to know what is the procedure to set the path so that i can save my files anywhere n execute them directly from command prompt without changng the directory to bin
help me plz
