Service calls with Idoc and/or JavaScript

Hi all, so I discovered Bex's blog and a tool he created to do service calls from the client, i.e. Oracle UCM jQuery Plugin for AJAX | Bex Huff

This is exactly what I'm looking to do, but unfortunately my boss won't allow me to stuff a third party library into my application.

So, how do I call services from plain old JavaScript? (AJAX techniques are welcome!)
Also, is it possible to call services from server-side Idoc Script as well?
