sequence integrity during export import

I have seen a few instances where sequences on various tables seem to have lost their count, during an export/import operation. Typically, I will be "refreshing" a test database with a production database. Any ideas/suggestions about what might be happening and how to approach this issue are appreciated. Thank you.
