Sending mail from Linux

Hi,

we are using mailx utility for sending database alert on solaris OS.now i want same functionality on linux system for sending database alert's mail.i know we have to use mail inplace of mailx,but when i give mail -s "Test mail" ks_johar@hotmail.com then it becomes hang...is someone know that how i can configure mail on linux system.
we are using Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon).
