Security updates for JRE

I am kind of new to the Java community but I have found several good FAQ's that answered some of my questions but I have one I need answered that I can't find much on:

How do you load or apply security updates to your existing JRE client? Say a legacy version 1.3.1.x etc or is it best to update to a newer version of the JRE?
