How can stop the error below when my second node tries to assign a VIP address for SCAN ?

I am installing Oracle 11g R2 Grid insfrasture across 2 lab machines named uranus and mars, running 64 bit RedHat EL 5. First attempt

Note: I am setting up the SCAN ip in the hosts file as opposed to the recommended method of using DNS. I understand this is not the recommended way but I know it works as its been done before.


Installation of grid infrastructure goes fine until I need to execute the root.sh script on the second node

root.sh on the first node, called mars, completes successfully


On second node, called uranus, root.sh exits dues to the following error

CRS-2676: Start of 'ora.OCR.dg' on 'uranus' succeeded
PRCR-1079 : Failed to start resource ora.scan1.vip
CRS-5005: IP Address: 10.50.1.217 is already in use in the network
CRS-2674: Start of 'ora.scan1.vip' on 'uranus' failed
CRS-2632: There are no more servers to try to place resource 'ora.scan1.vip' on that would satisfy its placement policy

start scan ... failed

'UpdateNodeList' was successful.

I dont have any specific SCAN address in the hosts file, I just use the uranus-ORACLE3 during install when prompted for SCAN address. uranus-ORACLE3 is set in the /etc/hosts

The first root.sh configures a VIP using this address , the second root.sh fails as it tries to configure ora.scan1.vip on the same IP (10.50.1.217)



Help much appreciated ...
