SAS hba drivers adaptors that support SAS tape

Does anyone know of a resource or document that will help me understand why some SAS HBA's do not detect SAS tape drives while others do? Is there a way to trouble-shoot this problem when the tape drive is not detected? One example situation is with a HP P212 SmartArray card. The LTO3 tape drive is detected in the card's BIOS, but the OS does not create /dev/rmt/X devices.

I would also like to find guidelines or specific drivers that always work with SAS tape drives (i.e. "mpt_sas" or "mpt" drivers)?
