Sample DB app side navigation menu with count

I'.m using apex 19.2 and universal theme.

I'm looking at the Sample Database Application and I can see the side navigation menu has a count (see below).

I look at the navigation menu and I can see the name has a parameter like below but I can't find how is this value being set? Thanks!
