Running Defragmentation Against an Active Oracle Database
725409Oct 1 2009 — edited Oct 1 2009Hello,
I'm a System Administrator that supports many platforms. I've discovered that fragmentation has
a huge impact on backups and some impact on performance as well.
We licensed a deframentation tool, called Diskeeper Server 2009. We liked the product because it's
advertised to run autoamatically and not take system resources from a running application. Diskeeper
professes that there is no negative impact to running the defragmentation product against an
active running database.
Our DBA's are concerned as they believe Oracle does not create locks on their files and that the defrag
tool can cause corruption. In my research, I have not found one documented problem.
I was planning on doing the defrag during off-hours, where server activity would be minimal.
Do you know of any issues running Diskeeper 2009 against active Oracle databases ? I'm talking
about any Windows 2000/2003 environment running Oracle 8.1 and higher.
Any insight/recommendation would be appreciated.
Thanks!
