RTRIM FUNCTION

I'm new at writing Discoverer Queries and I hope I'm in the right place to ask this question.

I want to trim a field that has this character in common : '|'
for example:
12SP|PIPE, 12.75 X .375AW STD

I want to be able to pull just 12SP..
Please help me or direct me to the right place
