RTF, XML , PDF

Hi,
Can you someone point me to information resources, or provide me with some ideas to convert RTF to XML.
My requirement it store user uploaded file in a format which later can be transformed to RTF, PDF, etc, So I felt XML is the one.
Most of the user uploaded documents are in MS Word or RTF format, which if I can convert to XML then using XSLFO etc object I can convert the XML to RTF, PDF or even HTML. This is my intention, any useful ideas are greatly appreciated.
