RMAN UNTIL TIME recovery fails on OPEN DATABASE RESETLOGS

616017Aug 8 2009 — edited Aug 27 2009
Hello,

I encountered widespread media failure about a week ago and decided to recover my database until a point in time about two weeks ago. The restore/recover part in RMAN seemed to work fine according to the logs, but my database failed to open on the ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS part.
This is my RMAN script:
RMAN> RUN {
2> SET UNTIL TIME=’27-JUL-09’;
3> RESTORE DATABASE;
4> RECOVER DATABASE;
5> ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
6> }

From browsing through the alert log, I believe one my redo log group 2 is corrupt and the database is failing to open when it encounters this group. Group 2 is my current group. I tried issuing the ALTER DATABASE CLEAR UNARCHIVED LOGFILE GROUP 2 command, but it fails with an ORA-1624: file needed for crash recovery.
Why would this file be needed for crash recovery if I'm restoring to a point in time two weeks in the past and not trying to roll forward any online redo log changes?

I can only get my database as far as the MOUNT stage; therefore, I cannot force a log switch. And since group 2 is the current group, I can't drop it. I'm not sure how to proceed.

Thank you,
Mimi
