RMAN Duplicate

My target database (10.2.0.4) is running in machine1. I want to clone the target database in another server which is called machine2. Where should the DUPLICATE command be run from? From machine1 or from machine2?

DB version is:10.2.0.4. Why do we require to connect to the target database when we have its backup on the auxilary server?
