RMAN direct to tape

OS AIX

DB Oracle 10.2

Hi, we have always been very lucky with our backup strategy. We run in archived log mode and are able to close the database every night and do a full cold backup of all of the db and control files to tape using OS tar.

We now have a requirement where a database needs to be active at all times. I have been using RMAN to back up the database to disk and from there using a tar backup to tape.

Is this the best way to do it? Our backups are done using a remote shell to a tape that is allocated to another box and we list the files required to be backed up and then create a tar file.

As the tape drive is not allocated to the host machine could i still do an RMAN backup direct to tape?  Do other people recommend backing up to disk first and then to tape?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Regards

Adam
