I am newbi , I really want to know the real purpose of Rman Catalog database in the real time scenario or Production Database.
The rational behind my question is below
1. if you execute in Rman - delete backup , along with the control file plus catalog gets update and you wont be able to recover / restore .
then what is the purpose of having a Rman catalog apart from using it us a central repository for Storing rman scripts.
Also I am aware that Rman catalog database will store the information in the form of table .
2. Can I assume if a user performs a OS delete we can recover the datafile using Rman Catalog , but that is what we do with Rman without Catalog . ?
so can anyone real explain me ? more on Catalog . Searched couple but didnt quite get a good explanation !
