RMAN Asynchronous and Synchronous I/O

From what I understand, when I use Parallel Backups, The number of channels I allocate should be no larger than the number of physical Devices.
Now, on the other hand, if my host operating system supports asynchronous I/O, whats the difference if I backup in parallel to the same device or to different devices ?
