rman and delete obsolete

oradbuserApr 12 2016 — edited Apr 14 2016

I am using Oracle 11.2.0.4 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have a small database where i run a full backup to disk (to fast recovery area) every day.

I have set the size for db_recovery_file_dest_size to xxGB and set rman recovery window of 7 days. My Archivelog deletion policy is set to none.

Every other week, Rman full back up fails as it complains that it has run out of space in the FRA. We get this in the log as

ORA-19804: cannot reclaim xxxxxx bytes disk space from xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx limit

When i go and look at the filesystem, i see that RMAN is keeping backups longer than the recovery window. I see backup set going back 10 days even though my recovery window is set to 7 days.

(RMAN report obsolete correclty lists backup files > 7 as obsolete.)

My question, is, why is RMAN not trying to delete obsolete backups, if it finds that the space is not available? According to RMAN documentation, we dont need to manage backups if we use the fast recovery area.

Obviously i am missing something. Can you guide on this issue? Thanks!
