Reports Server: All instances of one report hang ; All other reports run OK

We have a problem running reports on our application server.
The app server is running version 9.0.4.3.0 on Windows 2000 EE
It's been running for years without issue, but recently we have seen the following problem when running reports:
User tries to run report REP_01 (by selecting a menu option that calls WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT)
A new empty browser window appears, containing the message "Connecting to server ...", but the report does not run.
The user attempts to submit the REP_01 again, and each time it creates an empty browser window, but fails to run
The same user attempts to run a different report (REP_02), and this runs without problem.
At this point, the symptoms are reproducible on other client machines - REP_01 will hang, any other report will run OK.
We then go into Enterprise Manager and shutdown & restart the Reports Server component of Application Server.
Once the Reports Server has restarted, ALL reports will run OK.
We examined the log of Failed Jobs for the Report Server, and noticed that several instances of report REP_01 were "Cancelled as server is shutting down" at the time that we stopped the reports server - It appears as though one instance of the report has frozen, and all other instances of the same report are stuck in a logjam behind it.
Within a few days of restarting the Reports Server, the symptoms will re-appear, only a different report will be affected (for example, report REP_02 hangs, while all other reports run OK)
We're baffled as to what is the cause of this problem. We've turned on tracing on the Reports Server component of Application Server, and we're currently waiting for the problem to re-occur. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas what might be the problem, or what approaches to take to diagnose it?
Thanks in advance,
Steve.
