Removing a MouseListener

Hi!
I'm have a grid of labels each with a mouseListener attached so that when I click on the label, the picture on it changes. But I only want this to happen once, as in when I click a label which has already been click I don't want it to change its picture again.

I've tried out removeMouseListener() but it hasn't been of any help. Does anyone know an elegant way of how I can achieve this?
