Remove an ODBC connection in SYSTEM DSN without the driver / DLL existing

I have been all over Google trying to find a solution to this. Our company has a number of old ODBC connection definitions clogging up the System DSN tab on a Windows desktop. Many of these refer to old ODBC's created using Oracle 7 / 8 client installations that are long since gone.
The trouble is I cannot remove these using the ODBC Data Source Administrator, as I get the 'helpful' Windows error "The setup routines for the +*driverName*+ ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 126", then a further message with "Could not load the setup or translator library"
I have tried removing the entry from the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI, but the listing still appears in the System DSN tab, despite a reboot.
The is a major PITA. Has anyone found a solution or know of a workaround?
Thanks muchly
