Relation between processes init.ora parameter and nfiles kernel parameter.

Hi,
Is there any relation between the "processes" parameter of init.ora and "nfile" kernel parameter. Somebody told me that every user that logs on into the database uses as many nfiles as there are number of datafiles in the database.?
We are facing Ora-00020 maximum number of processes () exceeded" in the database and it has been suggested that we need to increase the nfiles parameter also for this which would need a server bounce. This is taking the process. If somebody can throw some light on this it would help me a tonnes.
