Recommended case for hostname

Good afternoon.

We have been having problems with our AS environment (Portal, Discoverer, Reports, Forms, OID, Web Cache). There are times when we get pages unavailable. One Oracle support tech suggested that we were having problems because in some places, the host name is in upper case and in others it is in lower case. Others have said that the case does not matter. Is there a general or a hard rule for the case of the host name? I have been unable to find any documentation specifying how the host name should be defined.
