Reclaim space from tablespace to OS

421723Jun 12 2009 — edited Jun 29 2009
Hi All,

This is on 10g EE Release 10.2.0.3.0 on HP-UX.

As part of a data purge process, we dropped a number of table, index partitions. As a result about 400 GB of free space is now available in certain tablespaces. We still have other objects in these tablespaces, but we know they are not going to need 400 GB to grow. We are trying to reclaim this space so it can be used by other tablespaces/data files.

Our DBAs are proposing this:
1. Create new tablespaces
2. Rebuild existing objects to the new tablespaces
3. Drop old tablespaces

We have the space to do this. However the concern is the down time with #2.

Can we use online table-redefinition to achieve this while the application is available to users? Are there other ways to reclaim the space while avoiding down time?

Thanks,
Rahul
