Re-scan bus ro discover new LUNs?

I have OEL 5.1 kernel 2.6.18-53.el5 connected to an EMC cx3-40 with Emulex HBAs. I have new LUNs presented to my server, but PowerPath will only 'see' them upon a reboot.
I found the following command -
echo "- - -" /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan
and issued it for both host0 and host1 in the scsi_host directory..but it did not 'see' the new LUNs. Only once I rebooted did the LUNs appear as expected.

I am hoping reboots will not be necessary each time I add space.
