RDIMM question

4063717Nov 28 2019 — edited Dec 5 2019

Hello everyone.

so my question is this...

I have an X4270 M1 and am having some ram issues. this may be my own fault, but here goes.

The manual does not say anything about 1 or 2R x 8 RAM sticks not working in my server, but when it talks about RAM for my server, the examples are 1Rx4 and 2Rx4 and 4Rx4 (single, dual and quad rank x 4 bit)

i have 6 x 2GB 1Rx4 PC3 x 8500R stick that work and post fine.

when i remove them and replace (for testing purposes) them with 6 x 2GB 2Rx8 PC3 -10600R, it posts sometimes with a less than total Memory count.

the server can use the PC3 -10600R RAM according to the manual, but i think it does not like the x8 sticks.

I have a yellow fault light. when i unplug and open the server and push the fault button, all the leds light up for all the locations that have sticks in there.

the server will boot and run with the 8 bit RAM, but still has a fault light.

i'm looking to buy more RAM, but do not want to buy 8 bit if it's not going to work.

so my question is 'does anybody have experience with or can guarantee 2Rx8 RAM should not be used?'

the manual says board max is 144Gb ram. With 18 slots, thats 8GB per slot. i'm looking to get to 48GB. so, 3 x 8GB per CPU or 6 x 4GB.

(just found that the RAM i bought for my Dell R710 is 2Rx4, i will have to bring it down to test this server)
