Ram Consumption/Caching in Oracle Database

533049Feb 14 2012 — edited Feb 21 2012
Hello community,

I'm new in oracle administration and i have some dubt about his function.

I have recentely installed an oracle database 10g on a linux redhat x64 machine with 6 Gb of RAM. On this machine there is also a Java application that require almost 1Gb of ram.

I configured oracle with no particular option, i found on metalink the requirement and i followed that guide.

My dubt are about the limitation of oracle ram chaching because when the system starts everything works ok and the ram consumption is normal, after a little time all my ram is cached by oracle and if I stop my AP Server, for maintenance for example, and I try to restart the service i receive an error because I have no enough ram to start it... Oracle has eaten also that!

How i can fix the ram caching allocation?

I have to limit the SGA parameter? But in according which another variable?

Sorry if this may result a "silly" question but I have no idea how to resolve this issue.

thanks for all

best regards
