RAC Install

We are in the process of RAC install. The Oracle requirements state that a crossover cable cannot be used for the private network. The requirement states that each server must be cabled through a switch (1GB port each) and then separated on a private VLAN. It creates actually 2 more points of failure and I am curious as to why it is necessary?

Does anyone have a technical explanation, other than Oracle requires it?
