Questions about Weblogic, ADF and ADF Essentials licences

user1688514Feb 2 2016 — edited Feb 2 2016

Hello,

If this is not the right forum for these questions, please could you indicate me where I should post them?

So, we have this old application that needs to be migrated to a newer technology. One of the envisioned technologies is ADF.

Of course there is the licensing price issue.

I have quite bit of questions, but please help me clear some things out; i have searched a lot on the internet but i don't quite yet have a clear picture of this.

I mention that I have worked in the past with ADF and Weblogic, but I had nothing to do with the buy of the licenses.

So here are my questions regarding the licenses:

1. From what I have read, in order to be able to use ADF for production purposes, you only need to get WebLogic server license per processor.

Could you please tell me if Weblogic Standard would be sufficient for developing complete ADF applications?

This is the price list I was consulting, on page 4, section II.

1.1. I have also read that you could deploy ADF on Tomcat. Are there any restrictions? should you consider a different development approach for this (for example would you still

be able to use adf security feature or all the others features that you would use when deploying on a Weblogic Server)?

2. I saw that there is the option of using this free version of ADF called ADF Essentials and you can deploy it on Weblogic and Glassfish servers.

What I don't understand is why would you chose ADF Essentials, that has fewer development options, if you still need to get the Weblogic licence, that allows you to use ADF with all the features?!

2.1 But can you use ADF essentials with other free servers: like the free version of Glassfish, Jboss or Tomcat?

2.2 I saw that for ADF essentials you cannot use ADF security anymore, so this means that you cannot define inside Jboss/Glassfish/Tomcat: Users and Roles as you can do in Weblogic and

map them to enterprise roles and application roles in Jdeveloper environment?

2.3 If you have used ADF essentials, could you tell me if it much harder to work with than with ADF in order to set the user security options, call to Webservices, Call to BI Publisher reports and to deploy to the free webservers like Jboss, glassfish, tomcat?

Thank you much! Have a good day.
