Question for RMAN expert (to disk vs to sbt)

All our database are backup using RMAN with sbt driver (we use NetBackup) and NetBackup store it on disk (we do not use tape). What is the difference if we move directly to disk instead of using NetBackup. Someone told me that is I backup directly to disk (instead of using the sbt) I will only be able to restore from where I did the backup, I will not be able to restore it on a difference system (to create a clone for example).

I'm not a RMAN expert (never play with it) so sorry for that stupid question, but if the answer is easy that will give you free point :-)
