Problems with multiple versions of JRE

843798Apr 1 2010 — edited Apr 5 2010
I and my fellow network admins have a perpetual problem juggling multiple versions of JRE. We have 6 or 8 different appliances and devices (Compellent SAN, Cisco ASDM, Fatpipe load balancer, Overland REO NAS) that need different versions of Java. We are a Windows shop and are running mostly Windows 7 and XP. Oftentimes the cure for the issue is to uninstall all versions of JRE and install the one the device we want to use "likes"...obviously that's not a good option when we may have to touch all these devices in a day for different tasks.

We've looked at things like using the Java control panel to enable/disable different versions and this almost never works. Is there a white paper or best practices document for getting multiple versions to co-exist? Thank you in advance for your help.
