problem with Oracle 10g R2 Win32 Universal Installer on windows xp sp2

Oracle Universal installer's screen disappears during the setup (second screen).

It works for the first screen to enter your password then disappears on the screen that says "Please wait this will take a moment". It then never comes back.

Setup Notes:
No previous Oracle Installations
Running Windows XP sp2 on Pentium 4 - 3.0 GHz
Trying to install Oracle 10g R2 (10201_database_win32.zip)
Tried resinstalling Java 1.4.2_10
Tried installing Java 5.0 update 6
Previous Java installations include:
1.4.2
1.4.2_03
Have installed Coldfusion MX 7.0 with JRUN 4 as well.
Tried running setup.exe -J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
Tried installing DirectX 9.c
