problem in importing excel file when MIME type is application/octet- tream

I am importing an Excel file using POIFS filesystem and HSSF. It's working fine for all the files whose MIME type application/vnd.ms-excel.
when the MIME type is application-octet stream and file extension is .xls its not working properly. I am new to both POI and working with importing excel files.

Any body can give me the details .
