Prepare disks for ASM (data files and FRA)
scottjhnJun 28 2012 — edited Jun 29 2012I intend to place the datafiles on a disk1 (sd1) and disk2 (sdb) while the backup files (FRA) on disk3 (sdc). Here is how I would do it:
//For datafiles
disk1 is partitioned into one primary partition (with native Linux system ID 83 not formatted)
disk2 is also partitioned into one primary partition (with native Linux system ID 83 not formatted)
oracleasm createdisk vol1 /dev/sda1
oracleasm createdisk vol2 /dev/sdb1
CREATE DISKGROUP DATA EXTERNAL REDUNDANCY vol1, vol2;
//For backup FRA
disk3 is partitioned into four primary partitions: /boot (ext3), / (ext3), swap (swap), and /u01(ext3)
The FRA will be put under the /u01, and then present to ASM:
oracleasm createdisk vol3 /dev/sdc4
CREATE DISKGROUP DATA EXTERNAL REDUNDANCY vol3;
Now, the problem. 1) the /u01 has already be formatted as ext3; 2) the Oracle software (DBMS) will also be place under /u01
Will this be an issue?
Alternatively, I can put FRA on the same disk as the datafiles, i.e., on disk1 and disk2. In that case, I would need to partition the disk1 into two primary parititions sda1 and sda2 (native Linux system ID 83 not formatted), one for datafiles and another for FRA (do the same for disk2). The downside is both the datafile and recovery file will be on the same hard disk.
Please offer some suggestions.
Thanks
Scott
PS: In production environment, all disk1, 2, and 3 will be put on hardware-based RAID 1.
