I did a fresh install of Solaris 9 on an Ultra 1 and attached an Apple LaserWriter IIf to one of the serial ports. The lp system was configured using lpadmin. I can print text and Postscript documents submitted locally and via the network. I ran into a problem while printing some graphics. The print job failed with a Postscript timeout error but the job stayed in the print queue after the partial job and Postscript error page were printed. One job was stuck for 45 minutes before I noticed and cancelled it. After the cancel, lp moved on and processed the next job normally. I need the system to recover without operator intervention.

I suspect that the printer did not tell the spooler that the job was finished but I can't prove it. I looked in the usual docs and FAQs for clues.

Any help would be appreciated.
